Meet Lucy Locket Loves Founder: Sportswear For All Sizes
Tue, 05 Feb 2019 by Liz Rosling
Lucy Arnold set up Lucy Locket Loves in April 2018. Previously a personal trainer based in Sheffield, Lucy didn’t plan on setting up a business but a sports injury left her unable to work full-time training clients. On packing away her sportswear, she noticed that all the designs were quite plain and bland – this was when the idea for Lucy Locket Loves was born.
Lucy wanted her leisure and fitness brand to reflect her own positive outlook on life – and her products do just that! Full of colourful, funky patterns and designs, the brand caters for all sizes and is praised in reviews for its comfort factor.
One year later, Lucy’s business has taken off, and with a number of popular items sold out, Lucy’s community of Lockets anxiously await their favourites to be back in store. You too can join the Lucy Locket Community, a closed Facebook group with over 5,000 members where supporters can make friends, empower and motivate each other online. Even Lucy’s Mum and Dad are big fans – they can be found on Facebook under Mama Locket and Papa Locket.
For 2019, Lucy Locket Loves partnered with Cancer Research UK which enabled Lockets to receive a 10% discount for all Race for Life events if they signed up before 31st January. Look out for Lucy Locket’s exclusive Race for Life leggings available mid-February – 10% of all proceeds will be going directly to Cancer Research.
On the 29th June you can also join the lockets for their own wave at the Clumber Park 5K Pretty Muddy event. With over 200 tickets already bought, you can buy yours here.
In line with their ethos ‘be happy, be healthy, be strong’ Lucy’s brand focuses on support for mental health. They have developed a strong community group with over 30,000 ‘Lockets’ following their social media platforms. We had the opportunity to chat to founder Lucy about her experience as an activewear brand owner and personal trainer.
1. Can you give us a brief description of Lucy Locket Loves?
Locket Loves is an activewear and fitness brand delivering fantastically funky designs with inclusive sizing from 2XS up to 5XL. We have developed a large online community of “Lockets” who support each other reach their physical and mental fitness goals.
2. That sounds amazing, can you tell us why you started your business?
I wanted to create garments with inclusive sizing to represent the people you will typically find in a gym-class or running group, not just chiselled abs and the traditional image of someone interested in fitness.
3. You’ve only been in business for a year, but can you tell us your biggest achievement to date?
We have received considerable media coverage from Cosmopolitan, Metro, Vogue and many other news outlets about our dedicated to being an inclusive brand. Recently the Independent listed us as one of the best running brands in the UK.
4. What would be your biggest piece of advice to female entrepreneurs just starting out in business?
It sounds corny but just do it! Get out of your comfort zone and give it a go. There’s only so much planning you can do but you’ll learn the ropes as you go along. Nothing can prepare you for the reality of dealing with the day-to-day operations of a functioning business, though it’s nothing to be scared of. In that respect I imagine it’s very similar to having a child!
5. Can you explain why you were drawn to the #WomenInSMEs campaign?
It’s crazy to think that only 19% of SMEs are led by women. I think it shows us there’s a lot more to be done to equal the score, so I invite all my sisters with a business dream to go out and pursue it. Even if we can get that to 30% in the next 5-10 years I would be incredibly happy!
